How the 2027 Social Security COLA May Affect Retirement Plans
Oct 29 2026 16:00

Social Security recipients are expected to receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027. Announced by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on October 14, 2026, this increase is the largest adjustment to benefits since 2023.

The change will affect an estimated 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). At Modern Strategy Investments, we believe it is important to understand what the adjustment could mean for your retirement income, monthly money management, and broader financial planning decisions.

What Will the 3.6% Social Security Increase Mean?

Beginning in January 2027, monthly Social Security benefits will rise by 3.6%, following a 2.8% increase in 2026. The precise increase will depend on each recipient’s current benefit amount.

The SSA estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will increase by about $75, rising from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that represents approximately $900 in additional benefits. SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% adjustment, with revised payments scheduled to begin on December 31, 2026.

The purpose of a COLA is to help beneficiaries retain purchasing power as the cost of everyday needs rises. Still, an increased benefit does not necessarily mean that all higher household expenses will be covered, particularly when essential costs continue to change.

How the Social Security COLA Is Calculated

Each year, the SSA evaluates inflation by looking at price changes for common goods and services, including food, transportation, and housing. The agency relies on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called the CPI-W.

To establish the adjustment, the SSA compares the CPI-W from July through September with figures from the same three-month period in the prior year. For 2027, that comparison produced the 3.6% COLA.

Although the adjustment is intended to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation, individual expenses may rise at a different rate. Healthcare and other necessary costs, for example, may take up a meaningful portion of a household budget. This is why a retirement plan should consider more than the headline percentage alone.

Additional Social Security Updates for 2027

In addition to the benefit increase, the SSA announced several changes that may be especially important for individuals who are working while receiving benefits or preparing to retire.

For 2027, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300. This update may be relevant for professionals, business owners, and other higher-income earners as they evaluate income and tax considerations.

The earnings limit also changes in 2027 for people receiving Social Security retirement or survivor benefits. If you are below full retirement age for the entire year, the earnings limit will be $25,560. For individuals who reach full retirement age during 2027, the limit will be $67,920 for earnings received before the month they reach that age. There is no earnings limit after full retirement age is reached.

Why Medicare Costs May Change Your Net Benefit

A higher Social Security benefit does not always translate directly into the same amount of extra income in your monthly bank deposit. Medicare premiums can influence the net amount you ultimately receive.

For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are withheld directly from Social Security payments. If premiums rise in 2027, they may reduce some of the additional income created by the COLA.

For that reason, it is helpful to review both your updated benefit statement and your Medicare expenses. Looking at these figures together provides a clearer view of how much income may actually be available for your monthly needs, savings goals, and other financial strategies.

Steps to Consider for Your 2027 Retirement Planning
